Here are some of the questions we hear most often about Cohasset Cares, our home safety evaluations and the services we provide.

  • Cohasset Cares is dedicated to helping local seniors remain safe, independent and comfortable in their homes. Our program is designed for seniors who may benefit from a home safety evaluation or practical safety improvements.

    Cohasset Cares provides home safety evaluations and appropriate safety improvements at no cost to the seniors we serve.

    The program is made possible through the generosity of community supporters, local partners and donors.

  • Cohasset Cares serves local seniors and the Cohasset community first, but we try to help anyone in the neighboring communities as well.

  • A senior, family member, friend or caregiver can reach out to Cohasset Cares.

    A senior can contact us directly, or a family member, friend or caregiver can reach out on their behalf if they're concerned about someone's safety at home.

  • During an in-home safety evaluation, our team gets to know the senior and discusses any safety concerns or challenges they may be experiencing.

    We may look at areas such as:

    • Entrances and exits

    • Stairs and handrails

    • Bathrooms and bathing areas

    • Lighting

    • Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

    • Walking paths and potential fall hazards

    • Other areas of the home that may present a safety concern

    We also talk with the senior about their daily routines, concerns and needs so that any recommendations are practical and appropriate for their home.

  • Cohasset Cares can provide or assist with a variety of practical home safety improvements, depending on the individual needs of the senior and the home.

    • Lighting & Visibility

    • Mobility & Accessibility

  • We do want the resident to be home during the evaluation. We also talk with the senior about their daily routines, concerns and needs so that any recommendations are practical and appropriate for their home.

  • Most evaluations take between an hour or two, but if we get into a good game of rumey, we have been known to hang around bit longer.

  • After the evaluation, Cohasset Cares reviews its findings and discusses practical recommendations based on the individual needs of the senior and the home.

    When appropriate, the team schedules a follow-up Action Visit to provide or install recommended safety improvements.

  • Absolutely.

    A family member, friend or caregiver can contact Cohasset Cares on behalf of a senior.

    If you're concerned about a parent, grandparent, neighbor or loved one, you don't have to wait for them to make the first call.

  • Your support helps Cohasset Cares continue providing free home safety services to local seniors.

    Donations help support the practical improvements and services provided to seniors at no cost to them.

  • There are several ways to support Cohasset Cares.

    You can donate, help spread the word about the program, connect a senior or family member with Cohasset Cares, or support the organization through community partnerships and volunteer involvement.

    Every bit of community support helps make it possible to provide safety improvements to seniors at no cost.

  • We'll discuss our findings with the senior and recommend practical solutions based on the home and the individual's needs.

    Depending on the situation, that might mean something as simple as improved lighting or a nightlight, or a larger safety improvement such as a grab bar, handrail or ramp.
